Most pop/rock tunes are built up from a small number of Chord Patterns. Think of the timeless classic ‘Wild Thing’. Those three chords define that song. And they have been used in countless other songs. They from a re-usable pattern.
We can train our ears to know the sound of each chord pattern. This lets us learn songs by ear. It gives us a mental shorthand to memorise songs easily. It helps us write new songs to use in our own church. It’s incredibly useful.
The good news? Just 12 common patterns make up the majority of songs. And each pattern has four chords or less.
